We recently had a hard drive failure on our Synology Diskstation NAS drive and the drive was making very nasty scratching noises so we decided to remove the lid and found that the hard drive heads had crashed into the platters while it was spinning leaving some very nasty scratches on the disks!

This is the worst damage I have ever seen on a failed hard drive so decided to take some photos and post them on the blog.

The hard drive head resting on the platter after removing the lid.

Dead hard drive

The drives head assembly was stuck in this position and wouldnt move.

Hard drive platters with scratches.

The RAID system on the NAS drive didnt lose any data after the failure of this drive and rebuilt the array in a few hours after installing a new drive.
